History
German libraries were founded in the beginning of the 20th century starting in the cities, later also in the countryside, often connected to the public schools. After 1920 the German minority established a library system under the umbrella organization "Wohlfahrts- und Schulverein" which enclosed 71 libraries at the end of the WW II. After the WW II it became necessary to build up a new library system. In 1949 the "Verband Deutscher Büchereien Nordschleswig" was founded, and in 1967 the new Central Library in Aabenraa could be initiated in the presence of minister Herbert Wehner. 1984 an annex to the building was ready for use.
